Given that it is estimated that the number of naturopathic consultations has doubled, and that naturopathic insurance coverage is the most popular type of insurance in Canada, it’s easy to understand why, in 2014, Industrial Alliance and Sun Life decided to stop honoring receipts issued by naturopaths who don’t display their diploma in full view of their clientele.
What is naturopathy and what is the role of the naturopath?
Naturopathy is a practice that aims to help the body heal itself, using a variety of natural therapeutic techniques such as exercise, breathing, relaxation, healthy eating, phytotherapy, homeopathy, manual therapy, osteopathy, massage therapy, orthotherapy, physiotherapy, kinesiology, coaching, counselling, soul therapy and all other approaches that exclude the use of any pharmaceutical products.
The naturopath seeks to re-establish the self-healing capacities inherent in each person, building on strengths to counterbalance weaknesses. In this way, he or she draws up a vitality balance sheet, which is not a diagnosis, but enables us, through a variety of natural means, to measure vitality levels, assess overloads and deficiencies, and stimulate and reinforce these abilities.
Naturopaths have a dual mission: as therapists, they help people regain their health, and as health educators, they provide advice on vital hygiene, so that people can maintain their health over the long term.
This is why, in this context of definition and in the absence of government regulation of the practice and academic training of naturopathy, considering the decision of Industrial Alliance and Sun Life and that all members already possess the academic requirements to obtain a diploma of equivalence as a naturopath, the CPMDQ offers its members the possibility of acquiring a diploma of equivalence as a naturopath as well as for other titles. Members wishing to obtain equivalence for their academic achievements must complete and sign the application form and send it to us, enclosing their up-to-date CV and all certifications obtained since joining the CPMDQ. Upon approval of the application, the member will be required to pay the diploma fee. Once the application has been completed, the diploma will be issued within a few days.
Members wishing to obtain an equivalence for their academic achievements but are below the equivalence hours or training required. Members can enroll for those required hours within our established affiliated union local colleges in our ( Continuing Education ) section in the above menu.
